6f997a38d3 Remove unneeded thread spawn 
As of `open` v3.0.0, this function never blocks, so we don't need to spawn a thread.

e75474fde7 Replace lazy_static with once_cell 
`once_cell` is a simpler macroless alternative that will be added to the standard library.
